What does being a Christian mean to you?
Being a Christian means that I have a brand new life. I’ve never heard of any religion that teaches about loving others the way Jesus does. Two years ago a Christian missionary opened a youth centre where I skated. I saw what it really meant for someone to have Jesus in their life. I’d heard a little about Jesus before, but I was never interested. But after truly knowing him, it is like I have a brand new life… Really!
What’s your journey as a skater coming to a Christian faith?
When I first started skating I thought skateboarding was awesome. I wanted to skate but I never had money to buy a skateboard. I saved up for a long time to buy my first board.
It was second hand. I started to meet with a bunch of other skaters. As I met these friends, my life changed. I finally felt like I had a family. However, there was a lot of bad stuff that followed as well. I got addicted to drugs as well as other things. It was fun for a while, but the good feelings never lasted. Three years ago I stopped those things, but life was still missing something. Before I knew the Lord, I really didn’t know what to do with my life. Then I came to know the Lord and he completely changed my thinking. I realised that wasting time on drugs and stuff like that was no good. When I found the Lord, it was like a bar of iron that was placed against me so I wouldn’t fall. I had strength like never before. I won’t back down.
I haven’t had a mum or dad since I was 16 years old. I truly started following the Lord when I turned 21. Now I know that the Lord spent all that time leading me to him. It was like I had a dad for the first time looking out for me. When I got sponsored, I was amazed. So many friends wanted to get a sponsor and I actually had one of my own. It was the first thing that the Lord answered in my life.
What about encouragement to others?
I want everyone to have faith in the Lord. Don’t back down in skating or in the Lord. The Lord is everything. Don’t give up. When I fail, I trust in the Lord and remember the words of the Bible. Skateboard for the Lord! Just like Jamie Thomas . . . he has been skating for a long time and knows the Lord. Superstar skateboarders who know the Lord are still strong with the Lord. They don’t fall back. God is the one who protects us and keeps us from hurting.
What have you learned from the Bible?
The main thing I learned from the Bible is that we must trust the Lord in everything and follow him wholeheartedly.
